“Akasha is pure, infinite possibility.”
I have been talking in my studio yoga classes recently about cultivating a sense of receptivity and openness in the face of the uncertainty and unsettledness of the current COVD19 physical restrictions in Melbourne, Australia. I feel that life is asking us to explore the possibility of letting go of our ideas, beliefs and expectations around how we think life should be, to release our grip on trying to control reality, and explore what is possible when we open ourselves to a way of living beyond our fixed and rigid ideas.
I believe we are being asked to cultivate a more spaciousness in the way that we relate to ourselves and in the way we relate to life, to release our ideas of who we ‘think’ we are, and allow ourselves to surrender to the natural rhythms of life that flow both within and around us.
Ayurveda, which is the science of healing for mind and body, and the sister science to Yoga, talks about the five great elements – Space, Earth, Water, Fire, and Air. These qualities are the building blocks from which our cosmos is built and also form the structure for our body and mind.
The quality that forms the container from which everything arises and to which everything returns is the element of Space, or in Sanskrit, Akasha. Akasha is a very subtle energy that is the backdrop for all of the other elements to form, create, and exist in relationship to one another. The quality of Akasha can be imagined as the space we experience between our thoughts, between our breaths, and between our actions. Akasha is the space outside of our physical body and the space within. Akasha is pure, infinite possibility – it is the matrix that is the birthplace of your creativity, and it is the source of all your dreams and desires.
“Akasha is the quality we want to connect with as we move through these uncertain times.”
Akasha is the quality that we want to connect with as we move through these uncertain times. We want to be able to see the bigger picture, to see what is possible beyond our perceived limitations, to understand what we need to release in order to create the space for what we do want in our life.
So to help you cultivate a little more spaciousness during this time (and through all your days), I have created a 20 minute yoga movement and meditation practice focussed on creating spaciousness both within and without. I would love you to include this video as part of your home practice and cannot wait to hear about your experiences.
If you would like more support with your home practice then I would so love you to join me in my private home practice community where you can access videos, resources and ideas to support you along your home practice path.
