5 Life Changing Lessons from My Self-Care Practice

I am truly grateful for the all the healing, insight and understanding my self care practice has gifted me over the years.

I had no idea when I first scrambled down to the back of the garden as a young mum (when the girls were asleep!) to try and find some sanity in my crazy days and sleepless nights, that this simple act of ‘care’ for myself would have such a transformative effect upon me and my life.

The learnings I have received from my practice have been life-changing, and even now, 20 years down the track, I continue to reap so many rewards from devoting regular time to care for me.

I must admit my practice ebbed and flowed over the years, with long pauses along the way. But it wasn’t until I REALLY committed to taking time every day to give myself the care and attention I needed, and created a daily routine that worked for me and my lifestyle, that the effects of the practice began to be really felt in so many wonderful ways.

I began to feel more centred, optimistic, and calm - and it has gotten to the point now where I have people continually telling me how ‘calm’ I am and how it makes them feel so much calmer! I am the first to admit that I have not always been this centred and grounded person - I could lose my sh%t at the drop of a hat, I am totally guilty of howling foetal position on the floor, and having major tantrums when life got hard …

But I have learnt BIG TIME by consciously being with myself every day and holding my heart when life gets challenging has gradually cultivated the courage, fortitude, self belief and compassion for myself to begin to make choices in my life that honour ME, choices that actually care for me, who I am and what is important to me.

So much of my life has been about putting the needs of others first, seeking the approval of others, making choices that won’t upset others, and fitting in so I don’t rock the boat. But my self-care practice has begun to untangle me from those beliefs and allowed me to taste a life that is authentic, purposeful, and a reflection of who I really am … living a life that I was always meant to live (and love!)

So here are 5 of some of the greatest lessons I have learnt from my practice so far and this, my friend, is the just the beginning … 🧡

I do not need my circumstances to change to feel happy

Engaging with mindful practices each day has allowed me to cultivate an ability to regulate how I feel without needing people or situations around me to change.

I have the capacity to feel difficult emotions

Holding quiet space for myself each day has deepened my capacity to feel difficult emotions such as anxiety, fear and resentment without needing to resist, escape or numb myself from them.

I have learnt to let go of the 'small stuff'.

I have gradually loosened my grip on how I think life should be, and allowed myself to open up to all possibility. This has enabled me to feel more relaxed, adaptable, and a deep knowing that nothing meant for me will pass me by.

I am worthy of a courageous life

Spending quality time with myself has cultivated a sense of ease and comfort in my body and a deep trust in myself. I am more willing to step outside of my comfort zone to try new things and allow the world to see the REAL me.

I love myself for who I am

This one has been a game-changer! I am so much kinder in the way I speak to myself and how I relate to myself. I want to feed myself quality foods, I prioritise time for me every day (even if it is only five minutes!). I am more discerning around what I say 'yes' to and who I share my time and attention with.

I have become my own best friend ♡

… and it is my greatest wish that you will become your own best friend too!
