A Mantra for Healing

Mahā Mṛtyuñjaya Mantra

Aum Tryambakaṃ Yajāmahe
Sugandhiṃ Puṣṭivardhanam
Urvārukamiva Bandhanān
Mṛtyormukṣiya Māmṛtāt

I surrender myself to the Divine Being who is supremely nourishing and represents the supreme Light of inner wisdom. May I be released from all suffering, just as the fruit gently releases from the stalk. My my mind be guided by this supreme Light, and free me from death, decay and sickness, and unite me with my eternal Divine nature.

The Maha Mrtyunjaya Mantra, alongside the Gayatri Mantra (see here for a previous journal post on the Gayatri Mantra), is considered to be one of the most revered sacred chants for meditation and spiritual awakening. It is known as Shiva’s Maha Moksha Mantra or the ‘Great Liberation’ mantra, and it is heralded for its healing properties, and as well nurturing the qualities within us to be open to our own eternal Divine nature.

This mantra is traditionally chanted to overcome any kind of ailment or difficulty that we may experience in our life. The mantra reminds us that we have the capacity to unbind ourselves from the push and pull of life by remembering the abundant and stable source of nourishment within. This simple shift in the way we perceive ourselves and our relationship to the world, helps us feel a little more sure-footed as we navigate the drama and changeable nature of every day life.

This mantra has featured heavily in my own home practice over the past few weeks. For me, I find the mantra has a beautifully soothing effect upon body and mind. The mantra can be chanted as an invocation at the beginning of your home practice or meditation, and can be chanted 3, 11, 21 or even 36 times if you are keen! Rest your attention at your heart and allow the resonance of the mantra to really be heard and felt. You can also use your mala beads for a Japa meditation practice, using the beads to keep count of your mantra recitations.

Sometimes I play a recording of the mantra in my home to bring an air of tranquility to the space, as well as sending a healing vibration out into the world. It can be really lovely to have the chant playing in the background as you go about your daily business.
